という賞が現在選考中です。2000年から2010年の間にアイルランドで刊行された書物の中から、ベストの１冊を選ぼうというもの。最終候補50冊が発表になり、この中からネットでの投票で受賞作が決まります。

この10年は「ケルティック・タイガー」はまだ元気なものの、その弊害が現れだした時期であります。物価の高騰や環境汚染がその代表的なものですが、アイルランド人の自信過剰といいますか、「ケルティック・タイガー」以前の反動が徐々に染み出しはじめた感じも否めません。無理もないといえばまことに無理もない話でありますし、一時的なものでもあってほしいわけですが、ま、アイルランド人も人間だった、ということでもありましょう。
それにもちろん09/11があります。あの事件がアイルランドの社会と文化に落とした影の色と濃さは、ヨーロッパの他の国々に落ちたものとはまた違っていたであろうことは、容易に想像できます。
そういう21世紀最初の十年のアイルランドが生みだした文学的成果の最高の50冊がこの候補というわけです。

筆者はなんとたったの２冊しか読んでいませんでした。ので、これを機会に残り48冊の読破に挑戦しようと思います。さて、どこまでいけるか。（ゆ）
